Who Will Shout First?

4 criminals are caught and are to be punished. The Judge allows them to be freed if they can solve a puzzle. If they do not, they will be hung. They agreed.
The 4 criminals are lined up on some steps (shown in picture). They are all facing in the same direction. A wall separates the fourth man from the other three.

So to summarize :-

Man 1 can see men 2 and 3.

Man 2 can see man 3.

Man 3 can see none of the others.

Man 4 can see none of the others.

The criminals are wearing hats. They are told that there are two white hats and two black hats. The men initially don't know what color hat they are wearing. They are told to shout out the color of the hat that they are wearing as soon as they know for certain what color it is.

They are not allowed to turn round or move.

They are not allowed to talk to each other.

They are not allowed to take their hats off.

Who is the first person to shout out and why?

Chance of Knowing Color of Hat

Here is the given situation!

Well, there are 2 possibilities of answer depending on what combination of hats Man 2 & Man 3 are wearing. One thing is sure Man 4 has least chance for getting what he is wearing. His crime must be the most serious one!

Case 1 : If Man 2 & Man 3 wearing same color of hat.

In this case, Man 1 would immediately come to know that he is wearing opposite color of hat & would shout out. In simple words, if Man 2 & Man 3 wearing WHITE (or BLACK) hats, then Man 1 & Man 4 must be wearing BLACK (or WHITE) hats. Since there is no chance for Man 4 to see Man 2 & Man 3 but Man 1 could see Man 2 & Man 3, he must be first to know color of hat he is wearing.

Case 2 : If Man 2 & Man 3 wearing hats of different color.

Now here Man 2 has to be very intelligent (like the reader as he has chosen to read this further). In this case, there is no way for Man 1 to come at any conclusion as there might be WHITE or BLACK hat on his head. After waiting for a while Man 2 has to apply some logic & should think this in his mind.

'Since Man 1 is not shouting he must be unsure with color of his hat. He would be sure only in case if I & Man 3 wearing same color of hats. Since he is unsure; the color of my hat must be opposite of Man 3's hat.'

Now the judge if he is honest would put criminal with least serious crime at number 1 (or  & 2) same color (or different) hats on Man 2 & Man 3.

A Most Unusual Paragraph

This is an unusual paragraph. I’m curious as to just how quickly you can find
out what is so unusual about it. It looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching.

This is certainly unusual!

Source

This is The Unusual Thing!

What was the unusual?

Well, you will not find anything wrong grammatically there neither you won't find any spelling mistake in entire paragraph. The letter 'e' is one of the most common letter used in English language. If you carefully observe the letter 'e' never appears in the paragraph.

The Ages of Three Daughters

I was visiting a friend one evening and remembered that he had three daughters. I asked him how old they were. “The product of their ages is 72,” he answered. Quizzically, I asked, “Is there anything else you can tell me?” “Yes,” he replied, “the sum of their ages is equal to the number of my house.” I stepped outside to see what the house number was. Upon returning inside, I said to my host, “I’m sorry, but I still can’t figure out their ages.” He responded apologetically, “I’m sorry, I forgot to mention that my oldest daughter likes strawberry shortcake.” With this information, I was able to determine all three of their ages. How old is each daughter?

Calculation of The Ages of Three Daughters

How it was asked to find with some clues?

The product of their age is 72; so possible combinations are,

3 x 3 x 8 = 72                       3 + 3 + 8 = 14

2 x 6 x 6 = 72                       2 + 6 + 6 = 14

2 x 2 x 18 = 72                     2 + 2 + 18 = 22

2 x 3 x 12 = 72                     2 + 3 + 12 = 17

2 x 4 x 9 = 72                       2 + 4 + 9 = 15

3 x 4 x 6 = 72                       3 + 4 + 6 = 13

If any of last 4 combinations was correct then I would have come to know ages of daughter straightaway as their sum is unique. So friend's house number as he must have told must be 14. That's why I was uncertain with the correct combination as they are appearing twice.

In next clue, he indirectly suggest he has only 1 oldest daughter. So 2,6,6 is eliminated as in that case he would have 2 oldest daughters.

So the correct combination is 3,3,8. That means he had oldest daughter of age 8 & younger twins.

Let's find out progress of snail day by day.

Day 1 : UP to 10, DOWN to 4

Day 2 : UP to 14, DOWN to 8

Day 3 : UP to 18, DOWN to 12

Day 4 : UP to 22 which is greater than 20.

So snail requires 4 days to reach the top of the wall.

A clock loses 10 minutes in every hour that means for 60 real minutes it shows 50 minutes. In another words, real time is 60/50 = 1.2 times the minutes shown by the slower clock. It was set correctly at noon & at 3:00 PM ; 180 minutes of slower clock elapsed. That means the real time is 180 x 1.2 = 216. So it's 3:36 PM in real time clock!

Selecting The Barbershop

A man is driving South to Florida for a vacation. On the way, he realizes that he needs a haircut, so he stops in a small town along the way. He asks one of the residents where he can find a barbershop, and the resident tells him that there are only two barbers in town, one in the north part of town and one in the south. The man visits the north barber, and finds that the barbershop is messy and the barber himself has a bad haircut. He then visits the south barber, who has a clean barbershop and a good haircut

Which barbershop to choose?

However, the man decides to return to the north barber for his haircut. Why does he do this?

This is why he does so!

Reason To Choose The North Barbershop

Here is the question!

Since there are only 2 barbershops in town each barber has to go to each other for their haircut. So barber with good haircut must had it from the other barber at the north. Obviously, the man choose him to get a nice look.

Hence he must chosse the north barbershop.

Bird's Journey From Train To Train

Suppose distance between SECUNDERABAD & CST is 1000 KM. Railway tracks are in straight lines with no curves in between.

A train with uniform speed of 100 kmph departs from CST at 9:00 AM. Same day on same track other train from SECUNDERABAD departs at 10:00 AM with uniform speed of 80 kmph.

A bird sitting on engine of train that departed from CST starts traveling toward the SECUNDERABAD & after touching the engine of that train travels back to CST train. A bird repeats this until trains collide.

How much distance the bird traveled & how many times did it travel to & fro?

Distance covered by bird in the journey?

Click for the answer!

Distance Traveled By The Bird

Here is the question!

Let's divide answer in 2 parts.

1.Finding distance traveled by the bird.

The SECUNDERABAD train is one hour late till then CST train covers 100 km.

Hence effective distance is 900 km

Total speed of approach = 100 + 80 kmph

Total distance covered = 900 km

Time passed before trains collide = 900/180 = 5 Hours

Speed of bird = 120 kmph

Distance covered in 5 hours by bird = 120 * 5 = 600 km

Distance covered in first hour by bird = 120 km

Total distance = 600 + 120 = 720 km

2. Finding how many times bird traveled back & forth.

1st travel -

Total speed of approach = 120 + 80 = 200 kmph

Total distance to be covered = 900 km

Time required to meet each other = 900/200 = 4.5 Hours.

2nd travel -

Distance traveled by CST train in 4.5 hours = 100 x 4.5 = 450km

Distance traveled by SECUNDERABAD train in 4.5 hours = 80 x 4.5 = 360 km

Distance between 2 trains = 900 - (450+360) = 90 km

Time left for collision is 5 - 4.5 = 0.5 hrs.

So bird ends up with 1 complete round.

2. If both groups weigh equal then weigh remaining 2 against each other. Heavier coin would be easily identified.

3. If one of group is heavier, then take out coins of this group. The counterfeit coin is among them.

4. Now weigh 2 of 3 coins of this group against each other.

5. If both are equal then obviously third one is counterfeit.

6. If one of them is heavier then obviously that one is counterfeit.

A is darker or B

The A appears darker than B here. But that's not the reality. Both shares equal levels of brightness & gray levels. A printer would you same ink to print those squares.

Checker Shadow illusion demystefied
Equally Darker

What's challenge to visual system here?

The task given to your visual system here is to determine the color of the object & here it is gray level. But shadow of cast plays here big role. The square under shadow reflecting less light than the one is not in shadow. Visual system need to do several tricks to compensate that shadow effect & determine the exact color of the square under shadow.

What tricks visual system uses?

1. Local contrast : Irrespective of shadow, a lighter check surrounded by more lighter checks is perceived as a check with more average lightness & vice versa. In the figure, the light check in shadow is surrounded by darker checks. Thus, even though the check is physically dark, it is light when compared to its neighbors. The dark checks outside the shadow, conversely, are surrounded by lighter checks, so they look dark by comparison.

2. Shadows often have soft edges while paints (here checks) have sharp edges. The visual system tends to ignore gradual changes in light level, so that it can determine the color of the surfaces without being misled by shadows. In this figure, the shadow looks like a shadow, both because it is fuzzy and because the shadow casting object is visible.

3. The "paintness" of the checks is aided by the form of the "X-junctions" formed by 4 abutting checks. This type of junction is usually a signal that all the edges should be interpreted as changes in surface color rather than in terms of shadows or lighting.

Conclusion :

The effect illustrates success rather than failure of our visual system. The illusion asking our visual system to act as a light meter; but it's definitely not built for it. What's the success of our visual system here is it breaks the information into meaningful components & then perceive different aspects of objects.

Water Measurement With 2 Buckets - Puzzle

What was the challenge?

Method 1 :

1. Fill up the 3 gallons bucket & pour into 5 gallons bucket.

2. Again fill the gallon bucket & once again pour it into 5 gallons bucket. After completely filling 5 gallons bucket there will be 1 gallon left in 3 gallons bucket.

3. Empty 5 gallons bucket.

4. Pour that 1 gallon into 5 gallons bucket. Now fill up 3 gallons bucket. We have 4 gallons of water now 1 in 5 gallons bucket & 3 in 3 gallons bucket.

Method 2:

1. Fill up 5 gallons bucket & pour it into 3 gallons bucket. 2 gallons would remain in 5 gallons bucket.

2. Pour that 2 gallons of water into 3 gallons bucket. Now only space for 1 gallon left in 3 gallons bucket.

3. Again fill up 5 gallons bucket & pour into 3 gallons bucket containing 2 gallons of water left. So only 1 gallon can be poured & 4 gallons would be remaining in 5 gallons bucket.
